How to Frost a Cake

Hummingbird Cake from the Humming Bird Bakery
Struggle with putting frosting on a cake? Especially on the sides? Frosting a cake is harder than it looks!
  • First, make sure that your cake has cooled off. If you frost your cake when it is still warm, your frosting will definitely melt!
  • Put a mound of frosting on top of the cake. Spread it evenly over to the edges of the cake with a narrow metal spatula, knife or spoon.
  • To put frosting onto the sides, put a generous amount on the edge of the cake at the top and slowly smooth the frosting down the sides of the cake. Continue doing this all around the cake.
  • Make sure that no part of the cake can be seen. I like a lot of frosting on my cake, so be generous with the amount that you put on.
